Whose streets? Our streets! Youth participation project with visitors from Paris

Advertising affects us all: On our way to work, school, or university. When we stand bored at the public transport stop. When we excitedly walk through the streets. Always. This is the focus of our new youth participation project „Whose streets? Our streets! Questioning advertising and access to public space.“ We are organizing it together with the Paris-based organization „Résistance à l’Agression Publicitaire (RAP). Highlights include a youth exchange in Berlin in March 2026 and exhibitions in Paris and Berlin in 2027.

What’s it about?

Due to their own economic situation and the state of the housing market in Berlin and Paris, young adults spend a lot of time on the streets. There they encounter advertising. On the one hand, this awakens hope and longing; however, they also experience public space as being controlled by others. Through the approach of „Advertising and Public Space,“ we want to encourage young adults to experience their environment as something they can change through their own determination. We would like to ask: “What is public space?”, “Who exerts influence here and how?”, “Why is there so much advertising here?”, “What does advertising (not) show?”, “How can we shape public space independently?”

Highlights

The highlight is a youth exchange in Berlin in March 2026. During the exchange, we will conduct artistic interventions in public spaces, which we will document. We will invite media to accompany us. We will also discuss the pros and cons of advertising in public spaces with members of parliament.

Exhibitions and Events

We subsequently plan to present the results of the artistic interventions in exhibitions in Berlin and Paris. We will also hold the following events during the project:

Workshop: Creating an Awareness Concept

Workshop „From Enmity to Friendship: France and Germany in European Unification“

Workshop: How to Create an Exhibition

Workshop: Layout
