Day 6 Thursday, 26.3. : Finally Performence Day!

Today is the final stretch and highlight of our EU-funded Franco-German project week, „Whose streets? Our streets! Questioning advertising in public spaces„: We’re heading into the city center to interact with advertising installations through subversive performances in public spaces. A participant’s report:

Participants report Day 6
On Thursday morning, the different groups gathered for a collective morning brief, which was the opportunity for everyone to know exactly in which subgroup they were gonna be for the afternoon interventions. Each group then gathered to finish preparing the different planned interventions, for example to decide exactly which locations were gonna be targeted. Once everything was prepared the whole group left the venue to go enjoy nice pizza slices in Neukölln. Then everyone went to VVP’s offices to go drop everything they wouldn’t be needing for the interventions. The group splited in three different types of interventions :

  • some of us were covering digital pannels with garbage bags that had been redecorated with anti-advertisement slogans
  • some were replacing bus stop ads with posters that had been created the previous days, asking to stop advertisement and subverting existing ad campaigns
  • some, wearing bear masks, were holding an intervention in collaboration with members of the Berlin Werbungsfrei campaign to collect signatures in the context of the referendum.

Each group had assigned photographers to make sure to collect traces of each intervention. Everything went just as planned, and in the end all of us were really happy with what we had accomplished. We all gathered at the end at VVP’s offices to come down, debrief, share snacks and watch the first images of the interventions. We then celebrated our success at the Syndikat Bar, and it was a really lovely evening !
